Celebrities, Cars And Coffee

Comedians-in-Cars-Getting-Coffee

So, what’s going on with this weird trend that’s starting to pop up all over the webiverse where today’s celebrities have suddenly felt the need to tape themselves in their car while interviewing each other on their way to get ‘coffee.’

From comedians to DJs to drag queens, it seems everyone is hopping on the “cars n’ coffee” bandwagon to give the world a quick glimpse into their high profile psyche. It’s quite brilliant, actually. Almost like Sundance’s TV series Iconoclasts only these celebrities are usually from the same industry and the entire interview takes place in the front of a car.  A great budget saver, these interviews only require a car and GoPro camera, plus it only stars two highly recognizable individuals who each participate on a voluntary basis. I’m sure a lot of networks are now kicking themselves for not coming up with such an idea in the first place, but alas it belongs to the Internet now.

The genius/trendsetter for this modern day phenomenon is none other than comedian Jerry Seinfeld. Such a feat is not surprising though from the man who headed one of television history’s most successful programs from his show based on nothing. He started his webseries ‘Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee’ on July 19, 2012 with his first guest being Curb Your Enthusiasm’s Larry David. From there it grew into three seasons starring comedians such as Louis C.K., Jay Leno, Chris Rock, Tina Fey, David Letterman, Ricky Gervais, Alec Baldwin, and Sarah Silverman. It was a great way for Jerry to get his face back on the radar as well as show off his vast car collection including a Jaguar, Lamborghini, Porsche, Rolls Royce and even a Volkswagen Bus.

From there, the idea grew into its own copycats and parodies. EDM producer-DJ deadmau5 (born Joel Zimmerman) started doing ‘Coffee Runs’ in his Ferrari with fellow producers and artists that included Tommy Lee, Pharrell, Zedd and Miss Detroit starting in September 2013. “Yes. This my daily ritual. Reality TV at its realist. I should do a weekly coffee run with commentary…that would be fun!” is the description on the mau5’s first ‘Coffee Run’ YouTube video.

Most recently, drag queen extraordinaire RuPaul (Andre Charles) got behind the wheel for her own joy rides with ‘RuPaul Drives…’ where front seat guests have included John Waters, Kat Von D and some of the contestants from Ru’s reality competition T.V. series, RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Though the schtick for both knock offs is the same – each industry leader drives their celebrity friend around till there’s nothing left to talk about – the topic of discussion varies with each, whether its deadmau5 discussing the responsibilities of wearing a massive mouse helmet on stage or Ru reminiscing about the Club Kid days of yore.

I’m curious as to which knock off will come to the forefront next – maybe Gwyeth Paltrow drives a hybrid while swapping organic-based recipes with fellow vegan celebrity BFF’s? In the meantime though, enjoy College Humor’s own recent parody of the series with ‘Pedestrians In Bars Eating Toffee’:
