NYC Must: Hedwig And The Angry Inch

When news first reached me that there was going to be a revival of John Cameron Mitchell’s rock musical ‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch,’ elated was an understatement to describe how excited I felt. When I first saw the film (starring Mitchell as the lead), it was followed by two more post plays due to my immediate addiction to the musical’s well-composed rock-inspired musical numbers and intellectual humor hidden within the script.

Now the story of an East German transgender singer returns to the New York stages since it first opened Off-Broadway in 1998, and this time it’s trading up to the big leagues with a Broadway debut at the Belasco Theatre. What was once an underground cult classic has recently attained the attention of the mainstream media and masses, from HuffPo to Vogue, thanks in part to the show’s new leading man: “How I Met Your Mother” star Neil Patrick Harris.

Though the presence of Mitchell is greatly missed, Harris does pretty good job filling into those five-inch gold platform go-go boots. From his spot-on East German accent to his perfect pitches, nothing was misplaced in Harris’s performance as Hedwig – but then again, you wouldn’t expect anything less from the four-time Tony host (three of which had won him an Emmy).

On top of such strong characters (including Hedwig’s husband Yitzhak played by supporting actress Lena Hall), the set and production effects had provided their own stand out performance while supporting the aesthetic and energy of the show. Before the first performer even steps onto the stage, one is immediately transported to a post-punk apocalyptic scene with an abandoned car in the middle of the stage surrounded by random auto carnage that hovers above it. Instead of red velvet curtains, the stage is flanked by what looks like beaten brick wall. Then when the music finally begins, the set’s special effects lends itself to each number’s unique vibe from transparent downstage screens showcasing trademark animation exhibited during “The Origin Of Love” along with blaring strobe lights that raise one’s fear and adrenaline levels in “Hedwig’s Lament.”

Bottom line, you need to see this show. Not only is it a rare moment in rock musical history to see Hedwig once again on a New York stage, but the production as a whole – the music, the story, the costumes, the characters – is enough to move you through several stages of deep emotions so that you are left breathless by curtain call.
