NYC Must: Noguchi Museum

I remember first hearing about the Noguchi Museum during an art history class I had taken in college. The course topic was contemporary Japanese art and the artist Isamu Noguchi came up in discussion one day. There was a slide show picture of his studio/museum in New York, displaying his revered sculptures in a carefully planned out garden along the banks the East River. “I definitely need to visit that museum someday,” I told myself, even though it was situated on the outskirts of Queen’s Long Island City.

Funny how fate works, huh? Who would have guessed that about a year ago, I would find an apartment situated less than a 30 minutes away from the museum. I couldn’t believe my luck that this iconic art museum – designed by Noguchi himself – would end up located so close to where I dwelled. Of course, I didn’t dash straight to the museum right way. A demanding work schedule and inclement weather deterred my long walk to its sculpture-lined garden and halls until finally, after a year and a half of living in the area, I was able to make the long trek to the Noguchi Museum.

From the N/Q Broadway train station, the walk was no longer than 15 minutes. Situated across from the a Costco warehouse one will find a small brick building with the white letters ‘Noguchi’ sprawled across the side. As you navigate yourself to the hidden entrance on the side of the building, there is a breathtaking view of the Manhattan skyline diagonally across the way on the other side of the East River.

For the more than fair price of $10, one is transported to a more tranquil and lively setting than the bleak streets of Queen’s riverside front of auto shops and outdated apartments. None of the sculptures within are labeled so that one can enjoy the aesthetic brought out by each piece while coming up with your conclusions on its purpose and meaning. There are cheat sheets on the side though if you’re really curious, but they’ll only reveal each sculpture’s title and a brief description on the room’s theme as a whole.

The museum is divided into several sections, with three rooms on the top level and three sections on the bottom along with a breathtaking garden outback. With Queen’s high rises in the backdrop, the garden serves as a nice fusion between modern day progress and realities along with the serenity induced by carefully designed natural palette of trees, rock gardens and stone sculptures. I swear, I sat on one of those wooden benches for hours just taking in each and every view that garden had to offer.

After visiting this museum, I will forever be grateful to what Noguchi has given this area which I have grown to love more each day. I definitely recommend a visit if you can, for the art and nature lover that secretly dwells inside all of us. For directions and more information, visit noguchi.org.

Celebrities, Cars And Coffee

Comedians-in-Cars-Getting-Coffee

So, what’s going on with this weird trend that’s starting to pop up all over the webiverse where today’s celebrities have suddenly felt the need to tape themselves in their car while interviewing each other on their way to get ‘coffee.’

From comedians to DJs to drag queens, it seems everyone is hopping on the “cars n’ coffee” bandwagon to give the world a quick glimpse into their high profile psyche. It’s quite brilliant, actually. Almost like Sundance’s TV series Iconoclasts only these celebrities are usually from the same industry and the entire interview takes place in the front of a car.  A great budget saver, these interviews only require a car and GoPro camera, plus it only stars two highly recognizable individuals who each participate on a voluntary basis. I’m sure a lot of networks are now kicking themselves for not coming up with such an idea in the first place, but alas it belongs to the Internet now.

The genius/trendsetter for this modern day phenomenon is none other than comedian Jerry Seinfeld. Such a feat is not surprising though from the man who headed one of television history’s most successful programs from his show based on nothing. He started his webseries ‘Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee’ on July 19, 2012 with his first guest being Curb Your Enthusiasm’s Larry David. From there it grew into three seasons starring comedians such as Louis C.K., Jay Leno, Chris Rock, Tina Fey, David Letterman, Ricky Gervais, Alec Baldwin, and Sarah Silverman. It was a great way for Jerry to get his face back on the radar as well as show off his vast car collection including a Jaguar, Lamborghini, Porsche, Rolls Royce and even a Volkswagen Bus.

From there, the idea grew into its own copycats and parodies. EDM producer-DJ deadmau5 (born Joel Zimmerman) started doing ‘Coffee Runs’ in his Ferrari with fellow producers and artists that included Tommy Lee, Pharrell, Zedd and Miss Detroit starting in September 2013. “Yes. This my daily ritual. Reality TV at its realist. I should do a weekly coffee run with commentary…that would be fun!” is the description on the mau5’s first ‘Coffee Run’ YouTube video.

Most recently, drag queen extraordinaire RuPaul (Andre Charles) got behind the wheel for her own joy rides with ‘RuPaul Drives…’ where front seat guests have included John Waters, Kat Von D and some of the contestants from Ru’s reality competition T.V. series, RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Though the schtick for both knock offs is the same – each industry leader drives their celebrity friend around till there’s nothing left to talk about – the topic of discussion varies with each, whether its deadmau5 discussing the responsibilities of wearing a massive mouse helmet on stage or Ru reminiscing about the Club Kid days of yore.

I’m curious as to which knock off will come to the forefront next – maybe Gwyeth Paltrow drives a hybrid while swapping organic-based recipes with fellow vegan celebrity BFF’s? In the meantime though, enjoy College Humor’s own recent parody of the series with ‘Pedestrians In Bars Eating Toffee’:

Drag

Jared Leto. Chiwetel Ejiofor. Phillip Seymour Hoffman. You may think the only thing these actors have in common is an Academy Award, but there is another fun fact that all these talented gentlemen share: they’ve all played drag queens or trans women at one point in their careers.

Of course, Jared Leto’s snatched up secret wasn’t really a secret to begin with since it earned him his own little golden man at this year’s Academy Award when he won ‘Best Supporting Actor’ for playing a HIV-positive trans woman in the film Dallas Buyers Club.

Another big winner that night was Chiwetal Ejiofor, who won ‘Best Actor’ for 12 Years A Slave. But what many fans don’t realize is that only nine years ago, Chiwetal portrayed another iconic character when he played drag queen Lola in the film production of Kinky Boots. Sporting fierce heels and an attitude to match, it’s no wonder the Broadway rendition that followed became such a success, scoring the Tony for ‘Best Musical’ in 2013. I mean you don’t get more passion than when you’re shouting out lines that include, “The sex is in the heel!”

Another role that will always stand out to me is the late, great Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s performance in Flawless where he plays a ‘female impressionist’ named Rusty (how fab!) living in the Lower East Side who helps costar Robert De Niro overcome a speech impediment that resulted from a stroke. Like the film’s title Hoffman’s acting is absolutely flawless, bringing to the role flair, humility and charisma that allowed him to become his character. The role serves as a precursor and testament to Hoffman’s superb talents that led him to receive an Academy Award in 2005 for ‘Best Actor’ when he played the lead in Capote.

I didn’t bring up these actors for just a movie history lesson, but rather a lesson in life. To quote an actual drag queen, “It takes a real man to become a woman,” though some may rebut at this while grabbing their crotch, I ask that they look at the evidence again.

Actors who have stepped up to play women – to make an attempt to reach and understand psyche much more foreign to their own – are the ones that take home the gold in the end. And if this list isn’t enough to convince you, then why not also look at the work of Jude Law (Roge), Dustin Hoffman (Tootsie), and Wesley Snipes and Patrick Swayze (To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything! Julie NewmarI).

If you still don’t believe me, then just try walking in a pair of heels for a day… I double dare ya.
